Are you in love with the new Gawker Media network redesign, present on sites like Gawker and Gizmodo? Well, now you can rip off that look for your WordPress site, just a theme install away.

Nice work by Sahas Katta, although more as a demo rather than an theme people should actually use in my opinion. If nothing else but for the post links and all that.
Incidentally, the jury (which is me) is still out on the Gawker redesign. I’ve written three posts, and scrapped them all. Hard one to wrap my head around, it’s either brilliant or an epic misfire by Denton & Co.
It would seem as if WordPress 3.1 will get a fifth release candidate, because that’s what my admin footer says right now anyway. Let’s hope it’s the last one. Update: This is probably a sneaky release to pinpoint an issue, sharp 3.1 is around the corner says @nacin.
In September last year I asked what you would change in the P2 theme, and the post got some recognition. Today I was pointed to this child theme take on P2 by @torbjorn_s which looks pretty interesting. You should check it out, I think, and then revisit my original P2 post and see if it solves any problems.
I did some test runs last week on forum software for a client, and while I think Vanilla is an excellent forum solution it still has a way to go with the WordPress integration. That’s why I’m happy to see that the bbPress plugin project is moving forward. Can’t wait to try that alpha!
The WordPress for iOS app is updated to version 2.6.5, fixing a number of issues including some image related ones. If you’re still experiencing some of them, try to remove the app and then install it again. The developers are looking for people to help push the development forward, so if you’re interested be sure to let them know.
I wrote a post on the new admin bar in WordPress 3.1 previously, but I would like to highlight another great thing with it: It incorporates the edit link on single posts and pages. This means we can cut this from themes if we want to. Sweet.
A new plugin called BuddiPhone sets out to make your BuddyPress powered WordPress community more accessible on your iOS device (being iPads and iPhones). The teaser screenshot on the landing page certainly looks clean enough, albeit a bit too close to the official Facebook iPhone app in my opinion.

Might be one to watch. Props for the name are in order, no matter what!
I’m really happy to see child themes in the wordpress.org theme directory. They need proper labeling though, and a link to the parent theme, otherwise users will be confused. After all, a child theme won’t work without its parent! Here’s Mazeld, of Photomatt fame, which is now a child theme using Twenty Ten.
WordPress 3.1 doesn’t just add an admin bar, among the new features are also Post Formats. This is basically a new way to sort content and it does indeed solve a lot of small problems. The Post Formats are:
- aside (for short asides)
- gallery (for post being just galleries)
- link (for post that are really links elsewhere)
- image (for posts that are really images)
- quote (for quotations)
- status (for short status updates)
- video (for posts that are really video embeds)
- audio (for posts that are really audio)
- chat (for chat transcripts)
Now, obviously you can have anything in any post with any Post Format. They are meant for the things above (sort of, I’ve kept it simple), but you’re not limited to it. This is your content. Continued →
One of the new features in WordPress 3.1 (out in RC3 now, help test it if you’re into that sort of thing) is the admin bar. If you’re a wordpress.com user you’ll no doubt recognize it.

Want to know what’s the best part with this new addition? Continued →
I’m happy to see that the third release candidate for WordPress 3.1 is out, but less thrilled about the amount of changes there are between RC2 and RC3. Probably the right call and all that, but this is a wee bit much to be altering in this phase in my opinion. I hope this means that we’ll see an RC4 version as well to avoid a point 1 bugfix release. Get RC3 here.
Sorry for the slight delay in getting TDH.me up to speed, I have just wrapped up two major deadlines and need a little breather. Just to make me feel a little better about this, I’ll release a free WordPress theme or two next week, how’s that?
The guys a WPCandy didn’t think to include me in their future of WordPress themes post, which says something about how active I’ve been in the WordPress community the past year or so I guess. After all, I’ve just sold tens of thousands of WordPress books and release free themes and…
Nah, just kidding. I’m pretty low key and I like to keep it that way. The post sparked my mind though, so let me give you my thoughts about the future of WordPress themes this year. Continued →
The new Notes Blog theme, detailed in this post, is now officially ready for release. It’s a first public version and as such it will probably contains some weird stuff you guys will have things to say about, but all in all I think it’s pretty solid. Rather, I know it is solid, it’s being used in serious projects already and have been running in closed beta for quite some time.
There’s really just one thing holding it off, and that’s the fact that Notes Blog requires WordPress 3.1, which is still in RC2 as I’m writing this. There will be an RC3 as far as I can tell from the core developer’s communiques, so the final release of version 3.1 (which I’m running here already, by the way) is probably a week or two away.
Frustrating.
I’ve been debating whether to upload the beta version anyway, but since I’d get a ton of “why did this break?” questions if I did, I’m holding off. You’ll have to wait, and so will I. Hopefully it’ll be worth it.
PS. This post is indeed a sign of things to come, and a shift in communication regarding the development behind the Notes themes. The idea is to keep more practical stuff, for users, on the Notes site, while I might blabber about decisions and other things here. I think it’ll make sense in the end.
I snuck out the WordPress page here on TDH.me, primarily because I had to drop the link to the Twenty Ten Tri child theme. I’ll tend to it later, this week is completely devoted to wrapping up Smashing WordPress: Beyond the Blog, 2nd Edition.
