Smashing WordPress: Beyond the Blog, 2nd Edition due on April 18 in the US

I’m happy to report that my publisher sent me a date for the second edition of my book Smashing WordPress: Beyond the Blog. As with the prior two releases, the book will hit the US first, arriving on April 18, and reach UK and Europe a few weeks later.

I’m still waiting for the cover and stuff like that, so the Smashing WordPress: Beyond the Blog, 2nd Edition book page is still pretty raw.

Pre-order links and more when I get it.

Obviously I’m thrilled about having had the opportunity to revise and update the highly popular first edition of Smashing WordPress: Beyond the Blog. The second edition is fully WordPress 3.1 compliant and includes new examples, revised code, and whatnot. I hope you’ll like it.

Will there be any way to get updates if you already own the first edition of Beyond the Blog?

I don’t think so, but I will ask the publisher. Every theme in the book will be released though, so there is that at least.

Hi Thord, I recently bought the first edition… Wasn’t aware there would be a second one coming up… Will that be very different from the first edition?

  • http://tdhedengren.com Thord Daniel Hedengren

There are some changes for sure, the second edition is written for WordPress 3.1+ for example. Those parts aren’t in the first edition, obviously. The concepts from the first edition still stands, however, so I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Hi Thord… just a quick question about this last reply… From your expertise, what are the key differences between WordPress 2.8 (first edition) and 3.1+ (second edition). Thanks for your time!!

  • http://tdhedengren.com Thord Daniel Hedengren

Well, custom post types and post formats are the major differences, but there are some stuff here and there obviously.

Hi Thord, I, too, recently purchased the first edition. Being a bit of a control freak, no matter how exceptional a theme might be, there’s always something I would change. For that reason, I decided I should learn how to build them. And your book is making it much easier to grasp both the theory and practice of building my own themes, even with a limited understanding of code. I’m looking forward to the release of the 2nd edition so that I can mine it for the updates and additional gems it undoubtedly contains. Thanks for all the help. Keep writing!!

Thanks for your kind words, I appreciate it!

What is the difference between the first and second version of the book, specifically? (besides the obvious wp 3.0+ support).

is there new chapters, code that is regarded obsolete in the first, etc?

  • http://tdh.me Thord Daniel Hedengren

Not obsolete perhaps, but there are new features introduced that are covered in the second edition. There are also new examples, and some of the old ones have been updated to make more sense, as well as edits all the way through.

If you have the first edition, then you’ll benefit from getting the second edition as well, especially if you want to use the Notes Blog theme (instead of the retired Notes Blog Core Theme), but if you’re strapped for cash or just don’t feel the immediate need then you might want to hold off until the next edition.
