I wrote a book on WordPress. It is called Smashing WordPress: Beyond the Blog and is available now from your favorite online retailers. The book was published in February 2010 with Wileys, and is a 300+ pages thick guide to WordPress in full color.
To me, WordPress is so much more than just blogging, and that’s why I went with the Beyond the Blog subtitle. In other words, this book isn’t limited to building cool blogs, but takes you beyond that. WordPress is a CMS capable of a number of things, and I want to help you not only realize that but to actually use WordPress beyond the blog.
Smashing WordPress: Beyond the Blog is part of the Smashing Magazine series of books, primarily aimed at the more advanced users. I didn’t want that to limit neither me nor the reader, so I’m starting from the beginning with WordPress, from install and basic theming, moving onwards to more difficult things. If you know a little HTML and/or PHP, then you can get started with WordPress with this book. Yes, the pace is high at first, but I’m sure you can manage.

Part 5
WordPress Toolbox
Nifty tips and tricks that makes WordPress do what you want it to do, solving the usual problems, and so on.

However, I am receiving the following error message and I have no idea how to go about fixing it. I don't have any plugins activated, so I assume it is the theme that has created the error: Notice: has_cap was called with an argument that is deprecated since version 2.0! Usage of user levels by plugins and themes is deprecated. Use roles and capabilities instead. It is pointing to wp-includes/functions.php on line 3321. I have enjoyed your book – thanks. I bought it before WP 3.0 and now I am wondering what I need to know to fill in any gaps? Is there much to look out for to ensure that I don’t need to shell out yet another book?
Back to your book – I think it’s one of the best purchases I have made.
3.0 has a few things that aren’t covered, like Menus and custom post types for example. The book will get you started well enough though, so when you’re finished with it you can probably just look up the new features in the Codex and learn them that way.
Awesome book. I’ve tried reading others but this is the first one where I finally felt like I was truly understanding how WP works.
Also love the chapter on ‘Essential WordPress Plugins’ – very handy!
